The association “Les Puits du Désert” (“The Desert Wells”) was founded in 2000. It’s active in the region of Agadez, inNiger and helps the poorest nomads and local inhabitants
Its main objectives are :
- Drilling wells to access water
- Improving access to safe drinking water to reduce child mortality
- Building of schools to improve access to education
- Improving access to basic health care
- Food aid and support
The head office of “Les Puits du Désert” is in Le Grand-Bornand, in the French Alps.
Since 2014, there is a local branch in Bordeaux named “Solidarité Désert Sud-Ouest”. It follows up the actions in Niger that have been funded by the “Adour-Garonne Agency” and the Bordeaux Metropolitan Area.
Since 2015, a local branch named “Desert Wells” was established in California.
The Nigerien NGO “Tidene” is the local partner of “Les Puits du Désert”.It was founded in 2000 and has been recognized as a charity by the government of the Republic of Niger in July 2004. It promotes solidarity actions between France and Africa and it has worked from the very beginning by developing the access to drinking water and to education. This effective partnership between the two organizations has a greater effectiveness in the field.
In Niger, “Tidene” manages coordination. Up to now, more than 217 wells have been built in the Tidene Valley and to the south by “Les Puits du Désert” and “Tidene”. The objective is to build 400 wells.
